G.A.R. Motorsports Team News: April 21, 2003
All that can be said is WOW! What a weekend. I started on the pole in my heat and qualified 3rd. The car felt great, the track was great, and everything was going my way. I was happy and the crew was happy.
For a change I got to sit and actually enjoy watching some races. The car was already to go when feature time came around. I started outside pole in the feature and got off to a great start. Took the lead right off the bat. I lead the first 9 laps and have to say that I was very happy with that. I didn't expect to stay in the top 5, but I did. After running a great, clean race with some of the best in the Sportsman class at Bridgeport Speedway, I ended up finishing a close 3rd. A VERY close 3rd. It was the best finish of my racing career. This was a huge confidence builder. I hope to be able to run up there every week.
I got to go behind the grandstands and see what that was all about. It was fun getting to see the happy faces of my crew, who ran over there, getting to meet some new people, and signing autographs for some fans. It was time for my interview and I have to admit, I was speechless. I had no idea what to even say. All I could do was thank my sponsors and my crew for all their support and hard work. Thanks again guys and gals. Hope we can get there again soon.
Most importantly I have to thank my sponsors. Mayor Quinn, AM1440 Favorites ( www.wmvb.net ), TV2 QBC ( www.qbc2.com ), Randy's Ring & Pinion ( www.ring-pinion.com ), Pepsi Bottling Company of Mays Landing, Fleet Financial Bank, MLE Roofing Company, Signs By Kevin, Aramark Uniform Services, Mighty Auto Parts, Landis Cab, Speed Palace, and T/K High Performance.

Here is Bridgeport's article about the Sportsman Feature that was written by Hugh Snyderman:
"Like their modified big brothers in their race, the sportsman twenty lap feature saw some drivers have their best ever efforts, while the winner was able to blast through and away from the pack on the way to a dominating win. Vineland, NJs Rob Pierce shot out from his front row starting spot to pull out to the early lead in the main event for the small block engined sportsman cars. By lap four, Kevin Collins had the Bos Construction #126 in second place, locking in on Pierce and the lead, and on lap eight, Collins was right on the rear bumper of the leader. Lap nine saw Collins and Pierce run almost the entire lap side by side, with Collins taking the lead under the halfway signal. With Collins pulling away from the field, all eyes were on Richie Pratt Jr, who had battled his way into the top ten after starting the race in the twenty-second spot. At five to go, Pratt was now in the top five, and the race first caution flag, for Bobby Lineman Jr, tightened up the pack. Pratt now had the Klair #34 on rails around the track, and was running third on the next lap, and taking over the runner up spot from Pierce on lap eighteen. Pratt tried to cut into Collins lead, but ran out of time and had to settle for the second place finish, with Collins getting his first win of the year. Pierce held off a fast closing Sam Wescott by just inches for a fine third place finish, his career best finish in sportsman action, with Tom Elvis Miller completing the top five. Sportsman qualifying heats were taken by John Pursell, last weeks winner, Willie Osmun, and Collins, with Andy Burkhart winning the consolation event."
